Quality classes

The so-called RAL regulations establish the standard terminology by which the different feather and down qualities are sold as filling material. The following terminology is usual (weight percentages are specified):

Terminlogy	Filling has a down percentage of
original down	at least 90%
original feathery down	at least 50%
original 3/4-down	at least 30%
original 1/2-down	at least 15%
original down containing feathers	at least 9%
original feathers	0-9%

It is important to note that there are no goods with a 100% down content. Even the very best down quality has a residual percentage of the smallest feathers of at least 2%-3%.

The term "original" signifies that the percentage of used goods is not more than 5%, the percentage of feathers/down from another type of fowl is not more than 30%.

Goose and duck quality are used exclusively for fillings.

Please note: this terminology which is currently used by consumers will in the next few years/future be superseded by new expressions in the course of European standardisation.
